On June 3, 2025, President Donald Trump increased tariffs on most steel and aluminum imports to 50% from 25%. Trump announced the move on May 30, 2025. (For a discussion of the policy implications, see Policy Brief: Trump Imposes Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum.)
Trump imposed 25% tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum in March, relying on his previously invoked national security authority under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
Tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the UK will remain at 25%. The Trump administration noted that changes were possible starting July 9, 2025, depending on the status of the U.S.-UK Trade Deal.
Trump stated that he increased the tariffs to protect U.S. industries and to “end unfair trade practices and the global dumping of steel and aluminum.”
Update: On June 16, 2025, the Commerce Department announced that the 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum products would cover home appliances including refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines.
